The UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Children’s Hospital is the state’s only comprehensive pediatric center, treating 95 percent of all pediatric cancer and other blood disorders patients diagnosed in Alabama.

The single largest provider of specialized pediatric services in Alabama for:

  • Cancers in children and young adults
  • Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors
  • Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes and Severe Immune Disorders
  • Sickle Cell Diseases
  • Hemophilia and Other Bleeding Disorders
  • Other Childhood Anemias and Blood Disorders

In 2009, the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology provided care to:

  • 300 cancer patients actively being treated
  • 150 children newly diagnosed with cancer
  • More than 1,000 survivors of childhood cancer who are eligible to participate in Taking on Life after Cancer Clinic (TLC Clinic)
  • 940 patients with sickle cell disease
  • 1,000 children and adults with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders
  • 60 patients newly diagnosed with a brain tumor
  • 30 new blood or marrow transplants in children
  • More than 11,000 patient visits in Clinic 8 at Children’s Hospital

Currently, there are 14 pediatric hematologists, oncologists and blood/marrow transplant physicians providing care for patients diagnosed with cancer and other blood disorders, ranging from birth to 25 years old. Care extends from diagnosis, through treatment and into long-term follow-up lasting 5 to 10 years or more.
